So this is pretty impressive, and I really admire your ability to put this much work into something that you'll end up having to tear down in a month. My only question is, is your house playing the music also? I just can't imagine it would be quite be the same without.
Radiohead Make 10 Million From In Rainbows? | News @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com

A neat idea... for Radiohead. I wonder how many young musicians are going to go deep into debt trying to do this themselves. First of all, the profits are not what they seem. The estimated net gain was based on average donation per unit sold by the number of buyers. The equation might be regarded as practical if not for the fact that the average donation reported in a survey is unlikely to be anywhere near accurate: the general trend in surveys is that people will exaggerate their positives and therefore tend to be a little thinner, a little taller, a little more generous than they actually are. Some people are going to report that they donated more than they did, some of whom probably did not donate anything, and those who donated nothing otherwise are less likely to answer at all, so many 0's are not being factored in. Furthermore, consider the costs being removed from that figure. Five million dollars, divided first of all among the band, then consider the costs of recording, promotion and the opportunity cost of not working otherwise. The band is not making as much as it seems. Most importantly, though, Radiohead had two crucial advantages over many bands who will invest much of what money they have in the hope of doing the same: recognition and connection. Most of the money labels invest into a band is marketing. A band can sell a few albums through word of mouth, and they might become famous if they're exceptionally fortunate, but OK Computer has made enough top 100 albums lists that they can get by without the promotional costs of making a new band recognized. Furthermore, Radiohead has become well enough known and respected that they probably know the right people to help lessen the expenses that do exist for them. I imagine the average Joe walking into a recording studio trying to make a record looking something like a sixteen year old girl taking her car to a mechanic by herself: I'm not saying in either case that the person isn't capable, but some attempt is probably going to be made to rip them off and it would be prudent for them to know what they're doing. Labels, if nothing else, know what they're doing. They want to save money as much as anyone and they have been around long enough to know how to do it. I'm not saying that labels aren't greedy or that what Radiohead did was not an interesting and perhaps promising step, but I would probably not advise a friend to do the same.

Seeing Moon and Antarctica era Modest Mouse made me happy, also Chick Corea. I need to listen to Chick Corea again...

Over all not bad, but I notice that they did not include In An Aeroplane Over The Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel, Her Majesty - the Decemberists, The Moon And Antarctica - Modest Mouse, or either Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album. At the very least, NMH should not have missed this list.

The idea of micro payments I like. Some of the most talented people in the world are not being discovered because they don't have the time to devote to it; working a forty hour week, particularly if you don't enjoy your job, can be very draining and leave little time or energy to focus on developing natural talent. If individuals could make a (modest) profit on their creative expressions I think some talent would be revealed. I certainly don't mind paying a few cents for their work if I enjoy it; ideas are at least as valuable as material goods, and for the same (or for less) an interesting idea will stay with you longer than a cup of coffee. Unfortunately this is not completely a solution to the recording industry middle man dilemma. Even were physical media, records, CDs, et cetera, to become extinct, an album does need to be recorded. Okay, so the artist needs to make a little investment first but he should be able to make his money back.. except that somebody offers to record a bands and to advertise for them in exchange for a cut of the profits to cover their expenses, pay their employees and make some profit, some of the bands accept and a few become famous thanks largely to the extra publicity from advertising. In hopes of breaking out of obscurity, other bands find companies to invest in them and once again we find ourselves paying iTunes prices for music. I love the idea of micro payments and I think for most web content it could be beneficial to authors and artists and ultimately to the quality of the work that would become available. The investment of recording and promoting music is most likely too great for micro payments to work.
